Hands-On Radio Training

Hands-On Radio Training

Helping New Ham & GMRS Operators Get On the Air

Getting started in amateur (Ham) or GMRS radio can feel overwhelming—there’s a lot to learn, from frequencies and repeaters to signal propagation and on-air etiquette. That’s why the Amateur Radio Collective of Western Carolina (ARCWC) is committed to providing hands-on training sessions tailored specifically for new radio operators and listing resources available across the region.

All Band All Mode Rig (FM)

Our training sessions, held in and around Hendersonville, NC, offer a structured but friendly environment where new operators can gain practical experience with their radios, learn the fundamentals of radio communication, and, most importantly, connect with others who are just starting their radio journey.

What to Expect from ARCWC Training

Our training sessions are designed to be interactive and hands-on, ensuring that new operators walk away with the skills and confidence to operate effectively. Here’s what you’ll learn:

🔹 Radio Basics – Understanding how to operate your handheld, mobile, or base station radio. We’ll go over radio types, power settings, and best practices for clear communication.

🔹 How Repeaters Work – Many Ham and GMRS users rely on repeaters to extend their communication range. You’ll learn how to program and access repeaters, use offset frequencies, and understand tone settings (CTCSS/DCS).

🔹 Introduction to Propagation – Whether you’re using a handheld radio locally or making long-distance contacts on HF, understanding radio wave behavior is key. We’ll cover how signals travel, the impact of terrain, and how different frequencies behave.

🔹 On-Air Etiquette & Best Practices – Proper net procedures, call signs, and how to engage in clear, professional, and friendly communication on the air.

🔹 Building a Local Radio Network – One of the most valuable aspects of these sessions is meeting other new operators in your area. You’ll make connections with people who share your interest in radio, helping to build a strong, supportive radio community.
