The EMCOMM Tools project, developed by The Tech Prepper, is an open-source web app designed to simplify and streamline digital communications in the field. It provides an easy-to-use, one-click interface that integrates key ham radio tools like Pat Winlink, YAAC, and hamlib, making it an ideal solution for off-grid, emergency, and field deployments.
Enhancing EMCOMM Tools for the Western Carolinas
While EMCOMM Tools is an Open Source project designed for global use, members of ARCWC are further developing it’s utility by optimizing it for the Western Carolinas’ unique terrain and communication needs. Given the uniqe environment and frequent communication gaps, having a reliable, portable, and decentralized system is vital for local EmComm groups, communities, and amateur radio operators. This will result in a distribution that is standardized and specific to our area and needs.

Key Features that Come Standard
- Switch Between Digital Modes – Supports APRS, Winlink Packet, and Winlink ADROP.
- Quick Message Sending – Predefined APRS and Winlink templates for rapid deployment.
- Offline Call Sign Lookup – No internet? No problem! Perform offline queries.
- Dynamic Grid Square Lookup – Automatically detects your location for easy reporting.
- QSO Distance Calculator – Quickly estimate contact distances.
- Local & Zulu Clocks – Always keep track of time-sensitive operations.
- System Telemetry – Monitor CPU temperature for stable field performance.
- WiFi-Accessible Web App – Simply connect to the device hotspot and open your browser.
Hands-On Demo Opportunities
Before the official release, we are organizing live demos for operators to test EMCOMM Tools in real-world scenarios. This is a great chance to:
- Experiment with the interface
- Test field deployability
- Provide feedback to refine the tool
Future Training & Support
Once the project reaches full release, our members may offer training and ongoing support to help amateur radio operators integrate EMCOMM Tools into their emergency communication setups.
